The Turks and Caicos Islands This color enhanced image of the Caicos Islands was taken from space. Islands in this chain are identified on the map. Columbus Passage (lower right edge of image) separates the Caicos from the Turks Islands by 22 miles. They are not shown here. Whales migrate through this waterway. Monkey Island Estates (yellow dot) is located on North Caicos Island, 1.5 miles east of Sandy Point. Looking west from Monkey Hill, the chain of smaller islands are stepping stones to Providenciales (the second island from left) which is 12 miles away and the country's most developed. The light area in the center is the shallow Caicos Banks. Coral reefs protect most of the islands' shores from rough seas. The islands and their superb white sand beaches are composed of limestone created from the coral. Beyond the reef on the northern edge of the islands, the Atlantic Ocean quickly descends to 7,000 feet making the chain a favored destination for "wall divers" and deep sea fishermen. ![]() |
